Foreign direct investment is often discussed in headlines and rarely in detail. For decision-makers, a short list of dependable sources goes a long way toward separating signal from noise.

This article is informational and part of the thinking behind The Investment Broadcast, a proposed interview series that aims to bring focused questions and clear explanations to complex business and investment-related subjects.

Start with the institutions that measure it

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development publishes research and data on investment flows, and the World Bank offers trade and investment context for individual economies. Both are useful for understanding trends before you consider any specific opportunity.

Read how financing institutions describe their work

The International Finance Corporation, EXIM and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation each explain the kinds of projects they support. Even if you never apply, their language shows what evaluators look for.

Keep a sceptical, practical eye

Data describes the past. Opportunity lives in the details of a particular project, partner and jurisdiction. Use public sources to frame your questions, then test them with people who know the ground. Our guides on market entry and project evaluation show how that looks in practice.
